Jindabyne is a new Snowy
Mts town 462 km s-w of Sydney. The original
one was flooded by the Snowy Mountains Authority
(1960s) to make way for the major hyrdro-electric
scheme. Modern day Jindabyne sits on Lake Jindabyne
and continues to be important for its proximity to
the Snowy Mountains ski resorts and for trout
fishing. European settlement began in 1820s helped by
a brief goldrush and Rainbow trout having been
released into the Snowy River (1894).
Tiny East Jindabyne nearby is located above the old
flooded town and some of its road still leads into
the lake! Snowy Mts Trout Festival (Nov), Man From
Snowy river Rodeo (Dec).
