Jacob's Creek
SA
Jacob's Creek is a small creek which forms in the
Barossa Ranges. It then flows westwards through
the wine-growing Barossa Valley about
10 km until it meets the North Para River just north
of Rowland Flat. It was named after William Jacob,
who first discovered and surveyed it in 1839 whilst
surveying the greater Barossa region. Local Aborigines called
it 'Cowieaurita' which means 'yellow-brown water'.
Jacob's Creek is probably Australia's best known
waterway as the well known nearby Orlando winery
makes a popular wine of the same name. The winery is
located just 2 km s-w of the creek in the small
township of Rowland Flat.
