Indigenous Music
Indigenous Music lies at the heart of Australian Aboriginal culture. Indigenous traditions, customs and Dreamtime legends are passed down through song, dance, painting, ceremonies & sculpture. Sacred ceremonies are often large gatherings with specific purposes and special songs, dances, body decoration to reflect the occasion. The didgeridoo epitomizes Aboriginal music. It may well be the world’s oldest musical instrument and has in recent years been adopted by some non-indigenous musicians. Didgeridoos are fashioned out of tree trunks and limbs and often highly decorated with Aboriginal art. A number of Koori performers have integrated other music genres such as rock, C&W, reggae into their traditional sounds to create unique combinations. Well known Aboriginal artists include Jimmy Little, Yothu Yindi, Pilgrim Brothers & Archie Roach.
