Humpback Whales
Humpback Whales are a large distinctive Baleen whale
with long pectoral fines and a knobbly head.
Belonging to the Rorqual species, humpbacks often
breach and perform acrobatics. They range between
12-16 m in length and weigh about 36 000 kg.
Humpbacks migrate thousands of km each year, fast in
winter and otherwise feed on krill and small school
fish. Once close to extinction due to over hunting,
numbers are now increasing since whaling has been
largely banned. Whale watching is a popular seasonal
activity enjoyed along many areas of Australia’s vast
coastline.
