Australia
Australia’s history dates back over 70 000 years with the arrival of Aboriginals. Early English & Dutch exploration followed in the 17th century with the first settlement (and penal colony) established in 1788 at Sydney Cove. The 19th century abounds with exploration (crossing Blue Mountains, charting major rivers), settlements (most capital cities), rebellions (Rum, Eureka Stockade), mining (Victorian & WA goldrushes), politics (first congress of trade unions, constitution drafted), sports (first cricket team, Australian Rules football), transport (rail network between major capitals). Australia’s 20th century witnessed the establishment of federation, Parliament House and a national flag (1901), Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and Australian Capital Territory (ACT) (1911), Qantas (1920), Sydney Harbour Bridge (1932), Melbourne Olympics (1956), Sydney Opera House (1973).
