Gundagai is an historic Riverina township 377 km s-w of Sydney. Sitting on the Murrumbidgee River at the food of Mt Parnassus, it is home of the famous ‘Dog on the Tuckerbox’ and has been immortalized in song and poetry. Originally occupied by the Wiradjuri Aborigines, European settlement began in 1820s and tragedy struck in 1852 when the settlement was almost destroyed by Australia’s worst flood disaster. An Aboriginal, Yarri is attributed with saving many of those stranded by paddling through the night in his bark canoe. Gundagai was subsequently moved to higher ground. Gold rushes and bushrangers swept through the area in 1860s. Important industries include sheep, cattle & grains.
