Gulf of
Carpentaria
The Gulf of Carpentaria is a large (300 000 sq km) body of water in northern Australia. It is located east of Arnhem Land (NT), north of ‘The Gulf’, (NT/Qld), west of Cape York Peninsula (Qld) and south of Arafura Sea (separating Australia from New Guinea). A shallow sea with an average depth of about 60 m, it measures approx 700 km (n-s) and between 600-670 km (e-w). The Gulf was first explored by Dutch explorers in 17th century who also named it. It experiences two distinct seasons – the ‘Wet’ (Dec-Mar) when it is humid and prone to flooding & cyclones and the ‘Dry’ (Apr-Nov) with hot, dry winds. Almost 20 rivers flow into the Gulf, amongst them – Roper, Leichhardt, Norman, Mitchell, Wenlock and its largest island is Groote Eylandt (part of Arnhem Land).
