Green Island is a tiny (15 ha) coral cay 27 km north east of Cairns. Of great importance to the Gungandji Aborigines, it supported a thriving sea cucumber industry and began as a holiday destination in 1940s. Measuring just 300 m wide x 650 m long, the island's interior is mostly lush rainforest. Many day trippers arrive from Cairns by catamaran, sea plane or helicopter to enjoy the excellent bushwalking, swimming and snorkeling.
