Great Sandy Desert - WA
The Great Sandy Desert is located in northern WA. It covers almost 285 000 sq km making it Australia’s 2nd largest desert. Predominantly flat (and sandy), it borders the rugged rocky Pilbara (west) & Kimberley (north) regions with the Gibson Desert (s-e), Tanami Desert (east) & Little Sandy Desert (south). Industries include pastoral stations (coastal) and mining companies (gold & copper). Historically, Peter Warburton was the first European to cross the Desert (1873), followed by the surveying and sinking of wells along the Canning Stock Route (1906-10) between Halls Creek & Wiluna (1 850 km). Missile testing in 1950s resulted in indigenous tribes being relocated. The Great Sandy comprises hundreds of long sand dunes, vast grasslands covered in spinifex, numerous salt lakes and the usual desert abundance of feral animals (camels, cats, foxes) which together with ever growing tourist numbers presents an ongoing threat to native animal populations and the habitat. An excellent way to experience this Desert is via the Canning Stock Route which requires well planned preparation and several weeks of travelling time. Other points of interest nearby are Rudall River NP (s-w), Lake Mackay (s-e) & Wolfe Creek meteorite crater (n-e).
