The Grampians are a spectacular region approx 250 km west of Melbourne in mid western Victoria. Named after a Scottish mountain range, these famous rugged sandstone formations make up the western end of the Great Dividing Range. The region comprises an interesting mix of 400 million year old mountains, dry plains and traditional farming lands. There are pretty lakes and waterfalls, forested gullies, swamplands and rugged cliffs many of which contain ancient Aboriginal art. The area is famous for its prosperous farming lands and more recently vineyards & olive groves. Main towns in the area include Hamilton, Horsham, Coleraine, Halls Gap, Stawell while the 170 000 ha Grampians NP with its rich Aboriginal and European culture, spring wildflowers and rocky vistas are not to be missed.
