Grafton is an historic
North Coast town 660 km n-e of Sydney. It is
scenically located on the Clarence River at the
junction of the Pacific & Gwydir Hwys. Original
inhabitants were the Gumbaingirr Aborigines and
white 'discovery' was made in 1831 by escaped
convict, Richard Craig. Logging, sugar-growing &
dairying have all been important industries, while
today Grafton acts as an important rural service
centre. Grafton markets last Sat each month. Grafton
Cup (richest rural horserace) (July), Bridge to
Bridge Ski Race (Oct), Jacaranda Festival (Oct-Nov),
Bridge to Bridge Sailing Classic (Nov).
