Glenelg is a popular Adelaide seaside suburb/holiday resort 11 km s-w of the CBD. Founded in 1836, it is SA mainland's oldest European settlement named after Lord Glenelg, a British politician of the time. Original inhabitants were the Kaurna Aborigines who named the local river 'Pattawilyangga'. The Patawalonga River has since been dammed and has thereby created an artificial boat harbour. The area has many cafes, restaurants, hotels & tourist attractions. Adelaide's last remaining tram service runs from Glenelg to the city centre (c.1929) on weekends/holidays. Weekday services are run by modern trams.
