Gippsland is a diverse and beautiful region in
Southern Victoria. Named
after an early governor, it stretches from just east
of Melbourne for
about 160 km further east and encompasses the
extraordinary Wilsons
Promontory to the south east. 'The Prom' is the
most southern point of the Australian mainland,
comprises 130 km of coastline and is the largest
coastal wilderness in Victoria. The diversity here
comprises snowfields, wilderness, rainforests,
farming lands, beaches and also industrialized areas
with Australia's largest brown coal deposits.
Together with a huge dairy industry, tourism, wine
growing and gourmet food production which all
ontribute richly to the region's economy. The main
towns here include Moe,
Morwell,
Traralgon,
Foster and Wonthaggi.
