The Gibson Desert encompasses 155 000 sq km sitting on a huge plateau along the Tropic of Capricorn. It is bounded by the Great Sandy Desert (north), NT border (east), Great Victoria Desert (south), Hamersley Ranges & Lake Disappointment (west). This vast salt lake is a major feature of the region covering 330 sq km, receiving very little rainfall and supporting only spinifex, mulga scrub and certain reptiles. The Gibson Desert was first traversed in 1870s and named after an early expedition member. Covering close to 2 million ha, the Gibson Desert Nature Reserve was declared in 1977 and features huge tracks of sandhills and grasslands. Many desert and feral animals inhabit the area together with a number of Aborigines. 4WD enthusiasts and Outback enthusiasts regularly visit the region gaining access via the infamous Gunbarrel Hwy.
