George Town is an historic Tamar River town in NE Tasmania 247 km north of Hobart. European settlement began in 1804 making it Australia’s third oldest settlement and Tasmania’s oldest town. Named in honour of King George III, the former busy port benefited greatly from nearby gold discoveries (1870s). Today George Town is a modern industrial and administrative centre.
