Australian Fur Seals belong to the Otariidae family together with sea lions. They are the largest of all fur seals measuring over 2 m in length and weighing between 200-300 kg with the females considerably smaller. They have an average lifespan of 20 years and an agile and robust body that can ‘walk’ on their front flippers. Fur seals vary between silver, grey & brown with thick brown hair and sharp teeth. Their habitat is mainly limited to southern Vic, Tas and the Bass Strait islands feeding on bony fish, octopus & squid. Although they are fully protected, their status remains vulnerable due to natural predators (Killer whales, large sharks), pollution (oil spills, toxins, plastic), reduced habitats, disease and thousands of years of hunting for their fur, oil and meat. Fur seals breed ashore in colonies and give birth between Oct-Dec although there is a high infant mortality rate. Some excellent locations to view fur-seals from a safe distance (they bite) is Seal Bay (Kangaroo Is), Seal Rocks (Vic), Albany (WA).
