Forster/Tuncurry are twin Great
Lakes towns separated by 26 km long Wallis Lake
312 km north of Sydney. Original
inhabitants were the Wallamba Aborigines with
European settlement beginning in 1856. The townsite
was first known as 'Minimbah', but renamed in 1870
after William Forster, then Secretary of Lands.
Tuncurry was known as North Forster until 1875 and
consisted mainly of a tea-tree swamp. The bridge
linking the two towns was built in 1959 replacing the
existing ferry service. Today fishing, oyster leases
& tourism are the main industries. Forster
