Flathead
There are about 40 species of Flathead in Australia with the most common being - Sand, Tiger, Rock, Dusky, Blue-spot. Easily recognizable fish due to their wide flat head, solid tapering body and large mouth, they also have two poisonous spines running along each side of their gills. Flathead are bottom dwelling fish that hide themselves in the sea floor and change colour to camouflage themselves even further for hunting purposes. They are fast agile fish feeding on crustaceans and small fish. The most common variety are Sand flathead are also known as Sandies & Slimies for the protective slime covering their scales. They reach 50 cm (length) and over 2 kg (weight) and are popular angling fish. Dusky flathead are the largest of the species growing to over 1 m and weighing 15 kg.
