Evans Head is
Far North Coast fishing village 727 km n-e
of Sydney.
Originally inhabited by the Bundjalung Aborigines, the
first European settler, Cpt Thomas Paddon named the
river and offshore reef after the first lieutenant of
his ship. In 1870s nearby Chinaman Beach had over 300
Chinese mining for alluvial gold. Evans Head was the
first prawning port in Australia and Paddon and his
family pioneered the application of oyster farming
scientific methods. Grandson, Evans, also pioneered
the Australian prawning industry. The early 20th
century saw the town grow further complimented by
holiday makers and RAAF bombing gunnery school and
