Eucalypts
Eucalyptus, meaning ‘well covered’ trees are a diverse species that dominate Australia’s flora with over 700 examples. Many are known as gum trees due to the large amounts of sap exuded (Scribbly Gum). Certain species are the tallest trees in the world (Australian Mountain Ash) and only very few eucalypts are deciduous. Eucalyptus trees have distinctive flowers with fluffy stamens (rather than petals) in red, pink, yellow, white and fruit capsules known as gumnuts which contain the tree’s seeds. Particularly famous were the Twin Gums now unfortunately dead, they were made famous by a painting by Aboriginal painter Albert Namatjira and became subject to visits from thousands of tourists.
