  Emu
Emu
Emus are Australia’s largest native bird and world’s 3rd largest after its ratite family relatives - ostrich and cassowary. These flightless birds can grow to 2m in height and weigh between 30-60 kg with their long legs and distinct three toed feet allowing them to run up to 50km/h. Found over most of the Australian mainland but extinct in Tasmania since European settlement, there are no longer large numbers of emus. Today they are farmed for their meat, leather and oil. Emus have a greyish-brown plumage, feed mostly on insects & plants and females are larger. Their calls are loud grunting, booming and drumming noises that can be heard at great distances.
