Creswick is a former goldming town and important rural service centre. It is located in Victoria's Goldfields 122 km n-w of Melbourne. The Wemba-Wemba Aborigines first occupied this area with European settlers and grazers arriving in 1840s. Gold discoveries in 1850s resulted in the destruction of old forests which were replaced by Victoria's first tree plantation in 1880s. The Victoria School of Forestry (1910) established numerous pine plantations which still surround the town. Today's important industries include forestry, grazing & agriculture. Creswick was also the birthplace of Australia's famous artist, Norman Lindsay (1879). Landfest (Mar), Forestry Fiesta (Oct).
