Cowes is Phillip Island's
major town & administrative centre. It is located
at the island's northern end just 143 km south of
Melbourne
making it an ideal day trip from the capital.
Original inhabitants were the Bunurong Aborigines,
followed by transient sealers & pastoralists
arrving from 1840s. Fishing (especially crayfish) and
chicory growing became important industries in 1870s
with the odd chicory kiln still in evidence. Tourism
began in 1920s with a
penguin colony access track, ferry service &
a number of guesthouses being built. The first
Phillip Island motor race was held in 1928 with the
mainland bridge being constructed in 1940. Cowes
market each Sun (10am-2pm).
