Coonawarra is a hugely successful wine growing area
in the Limestone Coast
region of
SA. Located 373 km s-e of Adelaide and
almost on the Victorian
border, this area has over 20 vineyards and wineries
nearby. Scottish immigrant, John Riddoch established
his large property, Yallum and in 1890 subdivided 810
ha into smaller vineyard and orchard holdings of 4-12
ha each. He named his enterprise the Coonawarra Fruit
Colony and so, the Coonawarra wine region was born.
