Coogee is a residential Sydney beachside suburb 9 km s-e of the CBD. Its name is thought to derive from an indigenous word meaning ‘smelly seawood’ or alternatively for the original name of the neighbouring bay (Gordon’s Bay). European settlement began in 1830s and the advent of an electric tram (1902) to the city led to its reputation as a popular seaside destination which it has retained to the present day. The famous, but short-lived Coogee Pier (1928-34) brought visitors in their droves and Coogee’s tram services were replaced by buses in 1960. Coogee Beach is protected by outlying Wedding Cake Island, however rip currents are fairly prevalent and swimming between the flags is recommended. Dolphin Point at the beach’s northern end has an open rock pool (formerly Giles baths) and also features a stunning bronze sculpture to honour the local residents killed in the Bali bombing of 2002. Coogee celebrates an annual Arts Festival (Feb) and swimming race (Wedding Cake) Island Challenge (Nov).
