Cockatoos belong to the parrot family. There are 13 Australian species with some birds living over 50 years. All cockatoos have a crest on their heads which is raised when excited or frightened. The easily identified Sulphur crested Cockatoo has a bright yellow forward-curving crest. Australia accounts for 1/6 of the world’s parrots. Cockatoos live in large flocks and breed in hollow logs. They have loud raucous voices, feed on roots, seeds & insects and their plumages range from black to white.
