  Cassowary
Cassowary
Cassowaries (Southern or Double-wattled) are the world’s 2nd largest flightless bird, after the ostrich. They are native to NE Australia and New Guinea rainforests and belong to the ratite family as do the emu, ostrich & kiwi. Normally shy animals, they can cause fatal injuries if disturbed. Cassowaries are omnivores although they mostly consume fruit. Distinguishing features include hair-like plumage, helmeted head and distinctive hair wattles. They are threatened by loss of habitat, wild pigs, dogs and traffic.
