Captains Flat is an interesting historic mining settlement in the Southern Tablelands 330 km s-w of Sydney. Originally inhabited by the Ngarigu Aborigines, white settlement began from 1830s with gold discovered in 1870s. Captains Flat sits on the Molonglo River just 60 km s-e of Canberra. By 1960s, mining and the railway had closed down however prospecting has recommenced in the area in recent times. Yesteryear Museum and interesting historic town walks. Deua NP located 17 km south.
