Boab Trees
Boab trees are unique and only found in WA’s Kimberley region. Some trees live for over a thousand years, making them Australia’s oldest living beings. These deciduous trees are related to the African baobabs and are sometimes called ‘bottle trees’ because of their unusual shape. Traditionally, indigenous Australians used the boabs for food, medicine and shelter and the early settlers that followed also found a use for them as temporary gaol ‘cells’ such as the Derby prison tree and prominent landmarks. Boabs flower and fruit during the Wet season and their roots are not only edible, but delicious!
