Bat
Australia has about 60 of the world’s 2 000 bat species. Bats are mammals and can be divided into two groups - Megabats (such as flying foxes) and Microbats (smaller species). There are 10 species of Megabats such as the Grey-Headed fruit bat and Little Red flying foxes and 50 species of the smaller bats. The two groups are very different with the latter hibernating in winter, entering buildings, predominantly eating insects. Flying foxes or fruit bats feed only on fruit, flowers and nectar. Four Australian species are amongst the largest bats in the world with some weighing 1 kilo with a wing span of over 1 metre.
