Bass
Strait
Bass Strait separates the Australian mainland (Victoria) from Tasmania. It was discovered by explorer, George Bass in 1797 and has historically been renowned for turbulent stormy seas. These are due to its average depth (50 m) and strong Antarctic currents that have accounted for hundreds of 19th century shipwrecks. As a result, lighthouses were constructed on Deal Island (1848), Wilsons Promontory (1859) and King Island (1861) helped further with the advent of metal ships. Bass Strait is home to more than 50 islands – predominantly King, Flinders, Cape Barren as well as several gas & oil fields discovered from 1960s. The Strait is serviced by 2 daily ferries (Spirit of Tasmania) between Devonport (Tas) and Melbourne (Vic).
