Australian Wineries and Wine
About 30 years ago, Australian wines began a rapid acceleration in popularity, both here and abroad. Today Australia produces large quantities of quality wines - red, white, sparkling & fortified and rank as the world's 4th largest wine exporter. All states and territories (except some of the islands) produce wines. The main areas are:
South Australia:
Regarded as the birthplace of Australian wines and their highly regarded reputation and excellent quality. Leading regions include the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, Eden Valley, Southern Vale & the exceptional Coonawarra district.
Western Australia:
Margaret River is considered one of Australia's most prestigious wine producing regions. The Swan Valley (near Perth) & Mount Barker (south west) also have substantial vineyards.
Victoria:
Victoria is renowned for its many excellent wine producing regions which include the Pyrenees, Mornington Peninsula, Rutherglen, Yarra Valley, Grampians, Heathcote & King Valley.
NSW:
The Hunter Valley is famed for its Shiraz wines but also produces many other varieties. Mudgee has developed from 'quaffing' wines to some of the country’s finest vintages. The Riverina often produces wines for blending purposes, but is also responsible for some superb wines. One of Australia's most highly regarded Bortrytis affected dessert wines is grown here.
Queensland:
Qld’s main wine growing area is known as the Granite Belt at Stanthorpe near NSW border. Quantities of grapes are also grown in the Roma region further north.
Tasmania:
Tasmanian wines have an excellent reputation and are produced in a number of areas. However the Tamar Valley would be the island’s premier location with superb Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays, Rieslings & Sauvignon Blancs.
Australian Capital Territory:
The Canberra area is also gradually emerging as a quality producer.
The Northern Territory:
Generally either too dry or too wet, a small boutique winery is nevertheless operating near Alice Springs.
