Auburn is an historic township considered the
Clare Valley's southern gateway. Located 109 km
north of Adelaide, it was
originally named Tateham's Waterhole after its first
settler and renamed after a town in Ireland. Pastoral
settlement began in 1830s with Auburn becoming an
important stopover point for early bullock drays
transporting goods across the state. Today it is a
major tourist destination with a number of local
wineries to further entice visitors.
