Albany region on WA's
South-West coast is also known as the Great
Southern District which centres around historic
Albany on King George Sound 417 km s-e of
Perth. Since grape growing began in 1967, the
area has produced some excellent varieties and with
that wines particularly around Mount Barker. There
are also a number of superb national parks including
coastal William Bay, West Cape Howe and Torndirrup
with its Blowholes, The Gap & Natural Bridge
formed by the Great Southern Ocean. Additionally
there is
Porongorup and the spectacular Stirling NP. Apart
from
Albany, Mount Barker and
Denmark are both important towns in the
region.
