Akubra hats are distinctive wide-brimmed hats traditionally made of rabbit fur felt. This family owned company, currently in its 4th generation was established in 1870s in Tasmania. Akubra, thought to be an Aboriginal word meaning head covering, became a trademark in 1912 proudly supplied the Australian army with Slouch hats in both world wars.  The company has been located in Kempsey on the NSW Mid North Coast since 1970s and today produces a huge variety of colours and styles. Particularly favoured by rural Australian men and women, the Akubra has a firm place in the country’s history and culture.
