Indigenous Australians
- Aborigines or Kooris
Aborigine, meaning ‘from the beginning’ is an apt description of Australia’s first inhabitants. With the discovery of ancient stone tools (Penrith NSW 1971) estimated to be about 47 000 years old, Australia’s Kooris may also be the world’s first people.
During the last Ice Age (over 30 000 - up to 2 million years ago) Australia was joined to New Guinea while Indonesian land masses were larger with smaller water distances between them allowing for sea voyages in small simple craft. It is still not known exactly where the Aborigines originated from but as the ice melted and the oceans rose, Australia and eventually Tasmania became isolated.
Aborigines adapted well to their new homeland and it is their tremendous affinity to the land and surroundings that explains how they have survived for so many millennia. The land lies at the essence of their spiritual beliefs and is not perceived as soil and rocks. Their tradition of passing down to each new generation their knowledge, rituals, languages etc has enabled their cultural heritage to live on.
